Album: Chloë and the Next 20th Century Artist: Father John Misty Genre: #Alternative/Indie #Folk Label: SubPop Records Description: Father John Misty strikes again, with his new studio album Chloë and the Next 20th Century, combining the luscious strings and band ballads soundtrack of movies from the 20s or 50s to create a charming and interesting soundtrack for him to sing over.
With the opening track, Chloë, the album jumps into its nostalgic big band sound, ending on a darker note, with the death of the namesake of the album. The album then goes into Goodbye Mr. Blue, my favorite track with a sweet guitar about what I assume is the death of his cat, the death of his relationship, and the fast passing of time. The album continues after with tracks like Kiss Me (I loved you), a song with interesting production, and more strings with loving crooning throughout.
With its many narratives brought up and usually not finished, the album seems faster than others of his, and with the strings to sweep you along, it is easy to enjoy. The album includes other great songs like Funny Girl, which was accompanied by a music video before the album came about a floating jellyfish that goes through the journey of Wizard in Oz. The music video, like the song, was beautiful, and the lifelike jellyfish floating through plains and up mountains made me root for it in both wonder and admiration.
Like his other work, I'd recommend Chloë and The Next 20th Century.
