Saturday afternoon while most were tailgating and getting ready for the Arizona Football Game the Wildcats Women's Volleyball team was locking in and getting ready to face off against the Alabama State Lady Hornets to bring the Wildcat classic, and the non-conference schedule to a close. Starting off around 12:40 in McKale Memorial Center the crowd started filling in and the match was under way.
Alabama State started off the first set going a bit long and giving U of A the first point to start off. Following that The Wildcats jumped out to a quick lead and forced Alabama State to take a timeout early in the first set. Coming out of the timeout the UA Volleyball team did not slow down, until the end. Closing out the first set 25-12 Arizona looked and felt like they were in complete control throughout the first set.
To start the second set the Lady Hornets jumped out to a quick 2 point lead that was quickly brought back by Arizona. While Arizona did not give up the lead after going up 9-6 Alabama State kept it closer for longer compared to the first set getting it as close 12-11. After that Arizona kept their foot on the gas and did not look back going on a 9-2 run extending their lead to 8 going up 21-13. Ending the set quickly after that with a score of 25-16 taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Early in the third set it was clear that Arizona was ready to finish the match jumping out to an early 10- 4 lead after a 6 point run causing Alabama State to use their first timeout. Coming out of the timeout Alabama State showed some life cutting the lead down to 4 before Arizona went on to break the game open making Alabama State take their second timeout with the Wildcats up 16-8. Arizona went on to win the set 25-18, winning the match 3 sets to 0.
Arizona looks forward to their next home game against Washington State on Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
