Interview with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World are undoubtedly one of the biggest and best acts to originate in Arizona. The albums Bleed American and Futures are staples of early-mid 2000s rock, and I would be hard pressed to find a member of my generation who would not enthusiastically sing along to their uplifting, timeless hit "The Middle" at any given moment. The band played their first home-state live show since before the Covid-19 shutdown when they visited Tucson on November 13th to play the Dusk music festival. When I learned Jimmy Eat World were coming to Tucson, I knew getting an interview with a chart-topping band might be a long shot, but I figured it couldn't hurt to reach out to their press team. I was surprised but thrilled when I was informed that the lead singer, Jim Adkins, was willing to speak with me.

In the interview, which is posted on Soundcloud, Adkins and I discussed Dusk, the creative process behind Jimmy Eat World's most recent album "Surviving", the impact of Covid on the music industry, and the current state of guitar-based rock music. As someone who has been a successful musician for decades, Adkins has a lot of interesting insight to offer. This interview was an incredible opportunity for me, especially as someone whose formative years were shaped by the pop-punk and emo music of Jimmy Eat World and their contemporaries.
